The Cost We Bare

Taxes are approximately one third of the cost of a gallon of gasoline:

  • On average, consumers pay 50.15 cents† per gallon for federal and state taxes.

  • The national federal excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon.

  • States with the highest per gallon state taxes include Hawaii (36.1 cents) Nevada (33.1 cents), California (31.9 cents) and New York (31.75 cents).

  • States with the lowest per gallon state taxes are Alaska (8.0 cents), Georgia (12.0 cents), Wyoming (14.0 cents), and New Jersey (14.5 cents).

  • Several states also have additional taxes that are based on a percentage of the total sale.
